Recruiting unrelated donors for the National Marrow Donor Program.

چکیده
Medical advances have made bone marrow transplantation the treatment of choice for certain hematologic diseases. For those patients eligible for a marrow transplant only about 30 percent find an HLA-compatible match within their families. Studies indicate that unrelated volunteers are willing to donate their marrow. The National Marrow Donor Program was formed in 1986 as a result of a federal contract. This group is a network of donor centers, transplant centers, and collection centers. The Connecticut Red Cross Blood Services is one of approximately 70 donor centers. Recruitment methods vary with each donor center, depending on the resources available. The Connecticut Red Cross Blood Services has recruited more than 1,000 volunteers for entry into the National Marrow Donor Program.

Psychosocial effects of unrelated bone marrow donation: experiences of the National Marrow Donor Program.
In this study, we investigated the psychosocial effects of unrelated marrow donation. Survey questionnaires were administered pre-donation, shortly post-donation, and 1 year post-donation to all donors through the National Marrow Donor Program over a 3-year period. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were then performed. Donors were generally quite positive about the donation 1 yea...

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-identical sibling bone marrow transplantation is an effective treatment for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. However, most children with this disease lack such donors and many patients receive transplants from alternative donors. This study compared outcomes of HLA-identical sibling, other related donor, and unrelated donor transplantation for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. Th...

INTRODUCTION For those with certain blood or bone cancers, bone marrow donation can mean the difference between life and death. The National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) operates the largest bone marrow registry of potential donors; however, at times when potential matches are identified, many donors opt not to donate. The purpose of this study was to describe perspectives from college-aged stu...
متن کاملUnrelated donor stem cell transplantation: the role of the National Marrow Donor Program.
Since its founding in 1986, the NMDP has facilitated more than 16,000 transplants for patients with blood disorders such as leukemia and aplastic anemia, as well as immune system disorders and genetic disorders. The donors who provided the blood stem cells for these transplants came from the NMDP Registry, the world's largest and most diverse registry of potential blood stem cell donors. Initia...
متن کاملDonor characteristics as risk factors in recipients after transplantation of bone marrow from unrelated donors: the effect of donor age.
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) maintains a registry of approximately 4 million volunteer unrelated donors for patients in need of a stem cell transplant. When several comparably HLA-matched volunteers are identified for a patient, various criteria are used to select a donor. A retrospective analysis of 6978 bone marrow transplantations facilitated by the NMDP from 1987 to 1999 was con...
